Amazon DSP vs Sponsored Ads: Which Do You Need?

Amazon DSP vs Sponsored Ads: Which Do You Need?

It's the question every brand asks once Sponsored Ads plateau: is DSP the next move, or a more expensive way to do the same thing? Short answer, they do different jobs, and most growing brands eventually need both. Here's how to tell what you need now.

Sponsored Ads, in one paragraph

Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display are Amazon's self-serve, mostly keyword- and product-targeted ads, bought per click inside the ads console. They're demand harvesting: they put you in front of people already searching for products like yours. They're where almost every brand should start, and where the majority of Amazon ad budgets sensibly sit.

DSP, in one paragraph

Amazon DSP is the programmatic platform: audience-based advertising bought on reach (impressions) across Amazon's full inventory, Prime Video, Fire TV, Twitch, owned pages, and the open web. It's demand generation: it reaches people based on what they buy and browse, often before they're searching for you at all. It also unlocks streaming TV and clean-room measurement.

The real differences

  Sponsored Ads Amazon DSP
Job Harvest existing demand Build and defend demand
Targeting Keywords, products Purchase-based audiences
Bought On Clicks Impressions/reach
Inventory Mostly on Amazon On and off Amazon, incl. streaming TV
Access Self-serve Largely partner/managed
Best For Capturing intent Reach, retargeting, full-funnel

When Sponsored Ads are enough

If you're early on Amazon, still have headroom in Sponsored Products, or run a tight catalogue in a search-led category, master Sponsored Ads first. DSP layered onto a leaky Sponsored Ads setup just spreads spend thinner. Get your foundation converting before you reach for reach.

When it's time for DSP

  • You're capped on search. You own your terms and there's little efficient Sponsored volume left to buy.
  • You need to defend the brand. Competitors are conquesting your listings; DSP retargeting and audience defence help.
  • You're building a brand, not just harvesting one. Awareness and consideration need reach Sponsored can't deliver.
  • You want streaming TV or proper measurement. Both live in DSP.
  • You're non-endemic. If you don't sell on Amazon at all, DSP is your route in entirely. (More on non-endemic →)

Why most brands end up running both

The two compound. DSP builds the demand and awareness that Sponsored Ads then harvest more cheaply; Sponsored Ads convert the intent DSP creates. Run in a silo they compete; planned together (the way our advertising and DSP teams work) they form a full funnel where each makes the other more efficient.

The bottom line

Sponsored Ads if you're harvesting demand; DSP when you need to build it, defend it, or reach beyond search. Most scaling brands run both, planned as one strategy. Not sure where your spend should sit? Our team will audit it and tell you straight.
